Troop 65 Direct Contact Leaders

Interested in Volunteering?

Troop 65 is always looking for adults willing to volunteer in our group of Scoutmasters. Assistant Scoutmasters are adult leaders over the age of 18 who help the Scoutmaster deliver the promise of Scouting. Each assistant Scoutmaster is assigned specific program duties. They can serve the troop by guiding a particular patrol to which they’ve been assigned, advising certain Scouts who’ve assumed a position (e.g. the quartermaster or OA representative), or fill in as necessary to assure the junior leaders have what they need to run things.

Do I need to have been a scout as a youth or experience to volunteer?

No! No prior experience in Scouting, whether as youth or as an adult in necessary. While some of our leaders have experience in Scouting as a youth, most have no experience when they join.

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF ME TO BE AN ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER?

We do have expectations of our Assistant Scoutmasters. We ask they attend 75% of troop meetings and 50% of outings, assist with Scoutmaster Conferences as needed, complete Assistant Scoutmaster training (see next question for more), wears the scout uniform correctly, lives by the Scout Oath and Law, shows scout spirit, ensure activities are conducted within Scouting America safety guidelines & requirements, and replies to communication from parents, scouts or prospective-parents/scouts within 48 hours.

DO I NEED TO COMPLETE ANY TRAINING?

There are specific requirements from Scouting America for all Assistant Scoutmasters (ASMs) as direct contact leaders. All ASMs must take Safeguarding Youth and Hazardous Weather training annually through the online training modules. Additionally, each ASM must take position specific (Scoutmaster/Assistant Scoutmaster) training through an in-person class or online webinar. The last required training is Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (OLS), which is an immersive weekend at Belk Scout Camp, offered each November and March.

Do I have to pay to be a leader?

Scouting America does charge fees for adult leaders, but our Troop committee has long believed that adults should not have to pay to volunteer. As a result, our Troop pays for the leader fees and any position-required leader training. There are additional costs associated with the uniform, but there are opportunities for savings or financial assistance. Please contact Mr. Hall at the button for more information.
